AstraZeneca, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, is selling its own generic version of Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) through AstraZeneca, according to documents from its website. The Nexium generic will be sold as a branded version of AstraZeneca's blockbuster gastro-esophageal reflux disease drug for gastroesophageal reflux disease patients, as well as a generic version of AstraZeneca's top-selling anti-ulcer drug Prilosec (omeprazole) for ulcer prophylaxis.
Nexium is the biggest generic of AstraZeneca's Nexium branded version of omeprazole, which was launched in AstraZeneca's manufacturing plant in Zagreb, Croatia in November last year.
The new version of omeprazole is the first generic version of Nexium, a widely prescribed medicine for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Zagreb, which produces the company's branded omeprazole product, has been selling the product exclusively in pharmacies since the launch in February. It is the third largest market for omeprazole in the world.
The drug's patents expired in October 2019, making it the only medicine in the EU to do so, and AstraZeneca is now selling its own generic version of Nexium, made by AstraZeneca, through its subsidiary, Novartis AG.

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. - Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don't feel an improvement immediately. - You may need to take Nexium 24HR for a few days before experiencing the full effect. - Nexium 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days. - Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you do not feel better while taking Nexium 24HR. If symptoms persist or recur within 2 weeks of completing the course, consult your doctor. Further examination may be required.
